Engineered vs. Solid Hardwood: Which Should You Actually Buy?

A solid hardwood plank and a quality engineered hardwood plank can be sanded, stained, and installed to look completely identical once they're down. What actually separates them is what happens underneath the finish: how each one responds to humidity, where it can go in your home, and how many times you'll ever be able to refinish it.

Solid hardwood is exactly what it sounds like: one solid piece of wood, top to bottom, typically about 3/4 inch thick. Engineered hardwood is a real hardwood veneer, anywhere from 0.6mm to 6mm thick, bonded on top of several layers of plywood or high-density fibreboard, each layer running in a different grain direction. Total thickness of the plank is usually 1/2" to 5/8" thick. That cross-layered core is the whole reason engineered hardwood exists, and it changes almost everything about where and how it performs.

Which One Handles Humidity and Temperature Swings Better?

Engineered hardwood, clearly. Its cross-layered core, with each ply running in a different grain direction, resists the swelling and shrinking that solid wood goes through as humidity rises and falls with the seasons. Solid hardwood is still genuinely durable wood, but that same seasonal movement is what causes the gapping in winter and the occasional cupping in a humid summer that solid hardwood owners learn to expect.

This isn't a defect in solid hardwood. It's just wood behaving like wood. Engineered hardwood was built specifically to solve this one problem, which is why it opens up rooms and installation options that solid hardwood can't handle as reliably.

Which One Can You Refinish, and How Many Times?

Solid hardwood has the clearer advantage here, because the entire plank, not just the surface, is real wood. A typical 3/4 inch solid plank can commonly be sanded and refinished 2 to 4 times over its life, which is a big part of why solid floors have a reputation for lasting generations.

Engineered hardwood's refinishing potential depends entirely on how thick its veneer is, and this varies a lot between products. A veneer under about 2mm generally can't be sanded at all. A mid-thickness veneer might tolerate one light refinish. A premium veneer of 4mm or more can often be refinished 1 or 2 times, getting reasonably close to solid hardwood's range. If refinishing matters to you, check the veneer thickness before buying, not just the wear layer's finish.

Which One Works Over Radiant Heat?

Engineered hardwood is the standard, low-risk choice. Its dimensional stability means it handles the gentle, sustained warmth of a radiant system without the expansion and contraction that solid wood is prone to.

Solid hardwood is generally not recommended over radiant heat, and this is one of the areas where the risk is real rather than theoretical: repeated heating and cooling cycles are exactly the conditions that cause solid wood to gap and cup. Some installers can make specific solid wood systems work with very careful moisture control and conservative surface temperatures, but it's the exception handled by a specialist, not the standard approach. Industry guidance generally recommends keeping a wood floor's surface temperature under about 85°F regardless of which type you choose, and any radiant installation should use an adhesive or fastening method rated for radiant heat specifically. As always, follow manufacture warranty guidelines.

Can Either One Go in a Basement?

Engineered hardwood can, with the right preparation. Its stable core tolerates the moisture and temperature swings of a below-grade space far better than solid wood, and a proper vapour barrier over the concrete slab is essential regardless of which engineered product you choose. That said, engineered hardwood is rarely the very first recommendation for a basement. Solid hardwood is not recommended below grade. Basement humidity and the possibility of moisture wicking up through a slab are exactly the conditions solid wood handles worst.

Are Installation Methods Different?

Yes, and this is one of the more practical differences. Solid hardwood is nailed down, which means it needs a wood subfloor, plywood or OSB, underneath it. It can't be installed directly over a concrete slab.

Engineered hardwood is far more flexible: it can be nailed, glued directly to a subfloor, or installed as a floating floor, which means it can go over concrete with the right underlayment. That versatility is a big part of why engineered hardwood works in rooms and homes where solid hardwood simply isn't an option.
