Flooring specs, installation instructions, and warranty terms are full of language that never gets explained in plain English. This glossary covers the terms you're most likely to run into while shopping, comparing quotes, or reading a manufacturer's installation guide, defined simply, with a note on why each one actually matters to your decision.

The 20 Terms Every Buyer Should Know

If you only learn twenty terms before buying flooring, these are the ones that come up most often and matter most to the decision: AC rating, acclimation, click-lock, engineered hardwood, expansion gap, LVP, mil, PEI rating, rigid core, SPC, subfloor, tongue and groove, underlayment, veneer, VOC, waterproof, water-resistant, wear layer, wide-plank, and WPC. Each one is defined in full below, in its own section.

Materials & Construction

Above-Grade

A floor level with at least some ventilated air space beneath it, typically the main and upper floors of a home. Almost any flooring material works above-grade, since it's the least moisture-challenged of the three grade levels.

Below-Grade

A floor level that sits partially or fully below outdoor ground level, most often a basement. Why it matters: below-grade spaces deal with real moisture risk from the ground, which rules out solid hardwood and makes waterproof materials the safer default. On-Grade

A floor level sitting directly at outdoor ground level, neither elevated nor below it, such as a slab-on-grade main floor.

Baseboard

The finished trim board that runs along the wall at floor level, covering the expansion gap on a floating floor and giving the room a finished edge.

Base Shoe

A thin strip of moulding attached to the bottom of a baseboard to cover the expansion gap, similar in function to quarter round.

Bevel (Edge Type)

The shape milled into a plank's side edge where it meets the next plank. A full bevel has a visible V-groove, a micro-bevel is much shallower and hides subfloor imperfections better, and a square edge has none at all. Why it matters: a heavier bevel looks more rustic but collects more dirt at the seam; a square or micro-bevel edge is easier to keep clean.

Engineered Hardwood

Real hardwood with a genuine wood veneer on top of a layered core, usually plywood, built in alternating grain directions for stability. Why it matters: that layered core resists humidity swings far better than solid wood, which is why engineered hardwood can go in more rooms, including some below-grade spaces with the right prep. Solid Hardwood

Flooring milled from a single, solid piece of wood all the way through, rather than a veneer over a core. It can be sanded and refinished many times over its life, but it's more sensitive to humidity and moisture than engineered hardwood.

Cross-Ply Construction

The layered core structure inside engineered hardwood, where each ply of wood runs in a different grain direction than the one beside it. This is what gives engineered hardwood its dimensional stability.

Veneer / Veneer Thickness

The layer of real hardwood on top of an engineered plank. Why it matters: a thicker veneer can typically be sanded and refinished more times over the floor's life; a thin veneer usually can't be refinished at all. Worth asking about specifically if long-term refinishing matters to you.

Hardwood Grade

A description of how uniform a hardwood floor's appearance is, not a measure of durability or quality. Higher grades (often called Select or Clear) show fewer knots and colour variations; lower grades (Character or Rustic) show more natural variation and generally cost less. Ask to see a physical sample of the specific grade you're quoted before you commit, since terminology varies by manufacturer.

Laminate Flooring

A resilient floor with a printed image layer under a hard, clear wear layer, built on a core of compressed wood fibre. Laminate is water-resistant, not waterproof, and it's rated for durability using an AC scale. See our laminate vs. vinyl comparison.

LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank)

Vinyl flooring manufactured in individual plank shapes rather than sheets or tiles, usually installed as a floating, click-lock floor. LVP is fully waterproof and one of the more common choices for busy households.

LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile)

Vinyl flooring manufactured in tile shapes, often designed to mimic ceramic or stone, installed the same general way as LVP.

Vinyl Sheet

Vinyl flooring that comes in large, continuous rolls rather than individual planks or tiles. Fewer seams than plank or tile format, which is part of why it shows up often in bathrooms and kitchens. See our vinyl plank vs. vinyl sheet guide.

Rigid Core

A vinyl plank built on a dense, stiff core (SPC or WPC) rather than a thin, flexible one. Rigid-core vinyl tends to feel firmer underfoot and hides minor subfloor imperfections better than older, flexible vinyl formats.

SPC (Stone Plastic Composite)

WPC (Wood Plastic Composite)

A rigid vinyl core, generally wood-fibre-free in modern products despite the name, known for feeling slightly warmer and more forgiving underfoot than SPC over time. Our SPC vs. WPC guide covers the real, honest trade-offs between the two.

Prefinished Flooring

Flooring that's stained and sealed at the factory before it ever arrives at your home, as opposed to site-finished flooring, which is sanded and coated after installation.

Wide-Plank Flooring

Flooring milled in wider-than-traditional plank widths, generally used loosely to describe planks over about 5 inches wide. Wide planks show off wood grain more dramatically but can also show more visible expansion and contraction with humidity changes.

Wear Layer, Cores & Ratings

Wear Layer

The clear, protective top layer on a vinyl or laminate floor that resists scratching, scuffing, and staining. It's measured in mils and is the main factor in how well a floor holds up to daily traffic. Our full guide to the wear layer covers how to match the number to your household.

Mil

A unit of thickness equal to one-thousandth of an inch, used to describe how thick a vinyl floor's wear layer is. A 12 mil wear layer is roughly 0.3 millimetres; a 20 mil wear layer is roughly 0.5 millimetres.

AC Rating

A 1-to-6 scale printed on laminate flooring boxes describing how well the surface resists wear from foot traffic, with a higher number meaning more durability. AC1-2 suit light residential use, AC3-4 are common, sensible choices for a genuinely busy home, and AC5-6 are built for heavy commercial spaces. Our guide to AC ratings covers the full scale.

PEI Rating

A 1-to-5 scale printed on tile boxes describing how well the glazed surface resists wear from foot traffic, similar in purpose to a laminate's AC rating. A light-to-moderate rating is genuinely enough for most home bathrooms; higher ratings matter more for heavy commercial traffic. See our guide to tile for a bathroom floor.

Janka Hardness

A scale measuring how much force it takes to press a steel ball halfway into a wood species, used to compare how dent-resistant different hardwood species are. A higher number generally means better resistance to dents from dropped objects or heavy furniture, though it says nothing about scratch resistance, which comes from the finish instead. Abrasion Resistance

How well a floor's surface resists wear from foot traffic and scuffing over time. For laminate, this is what the AC rating actually measures; for vinyl, it comes from the wear layer.

Impact Resistance

How well a floor resists denting or cracking from a dropped object or a heavy point of pressure, such as furniture legs. For vinyl, this comes mainly from the core (SPC vs. WPC); for wood, it comes mainly from species hardness.

Dimensional Stability

How well a floor holds its size and shape through changes in humidity and temperature, rather than expanding, contracting, or warping. Engineered hardwood and rigid-core vinyl are both built specifically for higher dimensional stability than their solid-wood or flexible-vinyl counterparts.

EIR (Embossed-in-Register)

A texturing technique where the surface texture of a vinyl or laminate plank is aligned to match the printed wood grain pattern beneath it, so knots and grain lines actually feel textured under your hand, not just printed flat. EIR texture tends to read as more realistic and higher-end than a plank with a flat, uniform texture.

Resistance

A general term for how well a floor withstands a specific kind of stress, stains, scratches, moisture, or pressure. Always worth asking "resistant to what, specifically" rather than treating it as one blanket quality.

Waterproofing & Moisture

Waterproof Flooring

Flooring that fully resists moisture penetration all the way through, meaning standing water won't damage the material even if it sits for a while. Vinyl (SPC and WPC) is genuinely waterproof; laminate and wood are not, no matter how a specific product is marketed.

Water-Resistant Flooring

Flooring that can handle everyday spills wiped up reasonably quickly, but isn't built to withstand standing water or prolonged moisture exposure. Laminate is a common example. This is a real, honest trade-off against waterproof materials, not an inferior version of them, it's simply a different level of protection suited to different rooms.

Moisture Barrier / Vapour Barrier

A sheet material installed between a subfloor and the new flooring to block ground moisture from reaching the floor above, especially important over a concrete slab. Many products call for one; check your specific manufacturer's instructions rather than assuming.

Absorption Rate

How much water a tile or stone actually absorbs, expressed as a percentage. Porcelain tile absorbs only a small fraction of what standard ceramic does, which is part of why it's the more common choice for consistently wet spaces.

Moisture Rating

A tile industry classification describing how absorbent a specific tile is, running from more porous to nearly impervious. Denser, less absorbent tile is generally the better fit for a bathroom or another consistently wet room.

Moisture Content

The amount of moisture actually present in a piece of wood at a given time. Wood naturally gains and loses moisture with its environment, which is the entire reason acclimation and expansion gaps exist in the first place.

Humidity

The amount of water vapour in the air, a major driver of how much a wood floor expands, contracts, or shifts throughout the year.

Delamination

When the layers of a plank separate from each other, letting moisture reach the layers underneath. Once a wear layer or design layer has delaminated, that section generally needs to be replaced rather than repaired.

Cupping

A form of wood warping where the edges of a board sit higher than its centre, usually a sign of excess moisture reaching the underside of the floor.

Crowning

The opposite of cupping: a form of warping where the centre of a board sits higher than its edges, often seen after a floor that previously cupped gets sanded flat before it's actually dried out.

Installation & Subfloor

Floating Floor

A floor where the planks connect to each other, click-lock or with an adhesive at the joints, rather than being fastened directly to the subfloor. Most modern laminate and vinyl installations float; the floor genuinely isn't attached to what's underneath it, which is exactly why it needs room to expand at every edge. Click-Lock

A mechanical joint system where one plank's edge angles into the next and locks in place without glue or fasteners, the most common way modern laminate and vinyl planks connect to each other in a floating installation.

Drop-Lock

A click-lock variation where the new plank is dropped down flat into place rather than angled in, often used for tighter spaces where angling a full plank isn't practical.

Glue-Down Installation

An installation method where the flooring is bonded directly to the subfloor with adhesive, rather than floating on top of it. Offers a very stable, quiet feel underfoot, but it's a bigger job to remove later than a floating floor is.

Nail-Down Installation

An installation method, most common for solid hardwood, where planks are fastened directly through their tongue into a wood subfloor. It requires a wood subfloor and can't go directly over concrete.

Face Nail

A nailing technique where the nail goes straight down through the visible top surface of the plank, generally used only where a blind nail isn't possible, such as the first and last rows of a room.

Blind Nail

A nailing technique where the nail goes in at an angle through the plank's tongue, hidden by the next plank once it's installed. This is the standard method for most of a nail-down floor.

Subfloor

The structural surface beneath the finished flooring, usually plywood, OSB, or concrete. Why it matters: a subfloor that isn't clean, flat, and dry enough is one of the most common reasons an otherwise good flooring installation goes wrong. Our subfloor prep guide covers what to check.

Underlayment

A thin layer of material between the subfloor and the finished floor that adds cushioning, sound dampening, or moisture protection, depending on the product. Some flooring comes with underlayment already attached; other products need it added separately.

Attached Pad

Underlayment that's already bonded to the back of a vinyl or laminate plank at the factory, so it doesn't need to be rolled out separately during installation.

Self-Levelling Compound

A pourable material used to fill low spots and even out a subfloor before installation. A common fix when a subfloor isn't flat enough for the flooring you're installing.

Expansion Gap

The small, intentional space left around the perimeter of a floating floor, and around any fixed object in the room, so the floor has room to expand and contract with humidity without buckling. Usually covered by baseboard, quarter round, or a transition piece once installation is done.

Acclimation

Letting flooring material sit in the room where it'll be installed for a period of time before installation, so it can adjust to that room's temperature and humidity first. Many manufacturers call for a few days at minimum, though the exact time varies by product, so check your specific manufacturer's instructions rather than assuming a fixed number. Radiant Heat Compatibility

Whether a flooring product can safely be installed over an in-floor heating system. Tile pairs well with both hydronic (water-based) and electric radiant heat. Vinyl generally works over hydronic systems but should never be installed over electric radiant heat, since a failed element can create damaging hot spots. Always confirm compatibility with your specific product's manufacturer.

Loose-Lay Vinyl

Vinyl flooring, usually in sheet or tile format, that's designed to sit in place using its own weight and a heavy backing rather than being glued or clicked into neighbouring pieces.

Transitions & Trim

T-Molding

A transition strip used where two floors meet at roughly the same height, commonly between two rooms of laminate, vinyl, or hardwood. See our guide to mixing flooring types for when each transition type applies.

Reducer Moulding

A transition strip that slopes gently down from a higher floor to a lower one, commonly used where hardwood or laminate meets a thinner tile or vinyl floor.

Threshold

A transition strip that finishes an exposed floor edge, often at an exterior door or where a hard floor meets carpet.

Quarter Round Moulding

A thin, rounded trim piece used to cover the expansion gap where a floating floor meets the wall, essentially a slimmer alternative to a full baseboard.

Stair Nose (Stair Nosing)

A trim piece that finishes the front edge of a stair tread, usually matched to the flooring's colour and finish. Necessary because floating floors can't be installed directly on stairs the way they're installed on a flat floor.

Stair Tread

A single, solid piece that serves as both the step's surface and its front-edge nosing in one unit, a more finished look than a separate flooring-plus-nosing combination, though a more expensive and custom-fit option.

Tongue and Groove

A joint system where one edge of a plank has a protruding "tongue" and the opposite edge has a matching "groove," so planks interlock along their length. Used in both traditional nail-down hardwood and some engineered and click-lock products.

Pattern & Design

Herringbone

Chevron

A flooring pattern where angle-cut planks meet edge to edge in a continuous point, reading as a cleaner, more precise diagonal line than herringbone.

Parquet

A geometric flooring pattern built from small, repeating blocks or tiles of wood, often in a basketweave or similar design.

Inlay

A decorative technique that sets a contrasting material or pattern into the floor, such as a border strip or a medallion, often used to frame an entryway or a dining space.

Grain

The natural pattern created by the alignment of wood fibres, unique to every board of solid or engineered hardwood.

Burl

A swirled, irregular grain pattern caused by a growth abnormality in the tree, prized in some hardwood species for its distinctive look.

Flatsawn

A common milling method where boards are cut so the wood's growth rings run roughly parallel to the board's face, producing the classic cathedral-grain look most hardwood floors have.

Carpet Terms

Face Weight

The amount of fibre in a carpet, measured in ounces per square yard. It's a useful general indicator, but not a reliable quality signal on its own, since a taller pile spreads the same weight thinner. See our guide to choosing carpet that lasts.

Twist Level

How tightly a carpet's fibres are twisted, measured in turns per inch. A higher twist that's properly heat-set generally holds its shape longer under heavy traffic before matting or fuzzing.

Density (Carpet)

How tightly packed a carpet's fibres are, a strong general indicator of how well it resists crushing under furniture and foot traffic, though it's one factor among several, not the single deciding one.

Pile (Loop vs. Cut)

The carpet's surface texture. Loop pile leaves fibre loops intact and tends to hold up well in heavy traffic; cut pile trims the loops for a softer, plusher feel that suits lower-traffic rooms like bedrooms.

Berber

A loop-pile carpet style, traditionally in flecked, neutral tones, known for durability. In homes with pets, especially long-clawed ones, loop styles including Berber can snag more easily than cut pile.

Tile & Stone Terms

Porcelain Tile

A dense, fired tile that absorbs only a small fraction of the moisture standard ceramic tile does, generally the safer starting point for a bathroom or another consistently wet room. See our porcelain vs. ceramic guide.

Ceramic Tile

A tile made from clay fired at a lower temperature than porcelain, typically less expensive and easier to cut, but more absorbent, better suited to lower-moisture areas.

Grout

The material that fills the joints between tiles. Grout is a filler, not an adhesive, the tile is actually bonded to the subfloor with a separate adhesive (commonly thinset mortar), applied underneath before the tile ever goes down.

Uncoupling Membrane

A thin layer installed between the subfloor and the tile that lets the two move independently, absorbing small subfloor movements before they can crack the tile above. Often used over a slab that has some flex or minor cracking risk.

Slip Resistance

How well a tile's surface resists slipping when wet. Manufacturers test and label tile specifically for wet-area use; a glossy, polished finish can look beautiful and still be genuinely risky once wet, while a matte or textured finish typically holds traction better.

Natural Stone

Flooring cut from real quarried stone, such as marble, slate, limestone, or travertine, prized for having no two pieces exactly alike.

Marble

A natural stone tile available in a wide range of colours and veining patterns, generally softer and more porous than granite or porcelain, so it needs more regular sealing.

Slate Tile

A natural stone in grey, green, or bluish tones, commonly used in slab or tile form for a rustic, textured look.

Limestone

A natural stone flooring material, generally softer and more porous than other natural stones, which means more maintenance to keep it sealed and protected.

Aggregate

Hard material, such as sand or crushed stone, mixed into concrete or terrazzo to add texture and a distinctive look.

Acid Wash

A treatment applied to stone or concrete to give it a distressed, weathered look.

Translucence

How much light a stone tile allows to pass through it, most noticeable in light-coloured marble or onyx.

Care, Finish & Appearance

Finish

The topcoat, wax-based or urethane, that protects a floor's surface from abrasion, stains, and fading. Different finishes offer different levels of gloss and durability.

Gloss Level

How much a finish reflects light, ranging from matte to high-gloss. A matte or satin finish tends to hide everyday scuffs and footprints better than a high-gloss one.

Polyurethane

A common hardwood finish that doesn't require waxing and offers strong protection against scuffs and moisture.

Aluminum Oxide

A finish additive mixed into some prefinished hardwood and laminate coatings for extra scratch resistance, one of the more durable finish options available.

Lacquer

A clear, high-gloss finish that dries hard and shiny, less common today than polyurethane for residential floors.

Shellac

A natural, high-gloss finish with strong resistance to stains and odour, largely a legacy finish on older hardwood floors today.

Urethane

A chemical-based sealant used to finish and protect a floor's surface, closely related to polyurethane.

Acrylic Resin

A synthetic coating that dries clear, helping a floor resist discolouration, moisture, and everyday chemical exposure.

Penetrating Sealers

Sealants that soak into the surface of a floor, most often stone or concrete, rather than sitting on top of it as a film.

Natural Stain

A clear finish applied to preserve a material's original colour and texture rather than changing it.

Refinishing

Sanding a worn floor's surface down and applying a new finish, restoring its appearance without replacing the material. Solid hardwood can typically be refinished many times over its life; engineered hardwood's refinishing potential depends on its veneer thickness.

Drum Sander

A heavy-duty sander used to strip and smooth a hardwood floor's surface before refinishing.

Photo Sensitivity

How much a floor's colour changes or fades when exposed to sunlight over time, a real consideration for rooms with a lot of direct light.

Weathering

Natural or chemical changes to a material's appearance from ongoing exposure to elements like water, minerals, or temperature swings.

Oxidation

A chemical reaction, essentially rusting, that can occur in stone or metal flooring elements when exposed to air or water over time.

Acoustics

How much sound a floor absorbs versus reflects. Hard surfaces tend to echo more than carpet or a floor over a quality acoustic underlayment.

Texture (Surface Texture)

The physical feel of a floor's surface, from smooth and glossy to deeply embossed and matte.

Adhesive

Any material used to bond flooring to a subfloor or bond tile to a substrate, such as thinset mortar, mastic, or a specialized flooring glue.

Adhesion

The physical bond between two materials, relevant to how well a glue-down floor or a finish coat actually holds over time.

Caulk

A flexible sealant used to close small gaps, commonly where flooring meets a bathtub, toilet, or another fixture.

Resin

A sticky, often synthetic substance used as a sealant or bonding agent between certain stone and tile installations.

VOC / Low-VOC

Volatile organic compounds, chemicals that can off-gas from some flooring adhesives, finishes, and materials, particularly right after installation. Lower-VOC products release less of this over time. If indoor air quality is a priority, ask specifically about a product's VOC level and any relevant certification, rather than assuming.

SDS (Safety Data Sheet)

A standardized document listing a product's ingredients, hazards, and safe handling instructions, the current term for what used to be called an MSDS.

Square Footage

The total area of a space, calculated by multiplying length by width in feet. The starting point for estimating how much flooring material to order, before adding extra for cuts and waste.

What flooring terms should I understand before buying vinyl plank?

At minimum: wear layer, mil, SPC vs. WPC, rigid core, and click-lock. Those five cover almost everything that actually differs between vinyl plank products.

What is the difference between SPC and WPC flooring?

Both are rigid, waterproof vinyl cores. SPC is denser and generally more budget-friendly; WPC feels a little warmer and more forgiving underfoot over time. Neither is a universal winner, see our full comparison.

What does a 20 mil wear layer mean?

It means the clear protective top layer is about 0.5 millimetres thick, on the thicker end for residential vinyl, generally a good fit for busy households or homes with large pets.

What is the difference between waterproof and water-resistant flooring?

Waterproof flooring resists moisture penetration completely, even standing water. Water-resistant flooring handles everyday spills if wiped up reasonably quickly, but isn't built for standing water. Vinyl is waterproof; laminate is water-resistant.

What is a floating floor?

What does AC4 mean on laminate flooring?

It's a durability rating on a 1-to-6 scale. AC4 is one of the most widely available residential ratings and holds up well even in a genuinely busy home.

What is the best veneer thickness for engineered hardwood?

There's no single "best" number, it depends on whether you want the option to refinish the floor later. A thicker veneer generally allows more refinishing passes over the floor's life; confirm the specific thickness for any product you're considering.

What is the difference between underlayment and a subfloor?

The subfloor is the structural surface of the room itself, usually plywood or concrete. Underlayment is a thin layer added on top of the subfloor, under the finished flooring, for cushioning, sound, or moisture protection.
